About the Collection
Student-run newspapers and periodicals have been a longstanding tradition in LMU’s history, showcasing the ideas, opinions, and writing skills of its students for the LMU community. Beginning in 1920, Loyola College of Los Angeles published The Cinder in the Eye. In 1923, the newspaper’s name changed to The Loyolan, and later to The Los Angeles Loyolan. In Spring 2015, the publication consisted of digital content in addition to a weekly print newspaper, then transitioned to being a fully digital publication during Spring 2020. It is now updated daily online at laloyolan.com.
This digital collection represents a selection of the total holdings of the newspapers, including:
- The Cinder in the Eye, April 1920-January 1923
- The Loyolan, February 1923-May 1931
- The Los Angeles Loyolan, September 1959-May 2000, September 2011-February 2020
Opinions and ideas expressed in the Loyolan are those of individual authors, artists, and student editors and are not those of Loyola Marymount University, its Board of Trustees, its student body or of newspaper advertisers. The Los Angeles Loyolan is a member of the Associated College Press and the California College Media Association.
This digital collection was partially funded by a gift from the Bill Hannon Foundation to digitize and provide access to materials from the archival collections of the William H. Hannon Library.
