Maricor, Marymount College Yearbook Collection, 1949-1970
Maricor, are ten Marymount College yearbooks published between 1949 and 1970. The yearbooks document student life, academic programs, campus organizations, traditions, and institutional development during a period of significant growth and transition leading up to the merger that established Loyola Marymount University.
Marymount College, one of the founding institutions of Loyola Marymount University, traces its origins to 1923, when the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary established a school for young women in Los Angeles. Beginning as an elementary school and later expanding into a high school, the institution continued to grow alongside the rapidly developing city. In 1933, Marymount Junior College opened in Westwood and evolved into a four-year institution, receiving authority to grant bachelor's degrees in 1948, at which time it became known as Marymount College of Los Angeles.
In 1960, Marymount College relocated its two-year and four-year programs to a new campus on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The college expanded further through a 1967 partnership with St. Joseph College of Orange, a liberal arts college operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. In 1968, Marymount College affiliated with Loyola University after moving its four-year program to Loyola's Westchester campus, while its two-year program remained on the Palos Verdes campus as a separate institution. Although affiliated, Marymount College and Loyola University maintained separate administrations, admissions offices, registrars, and leadership for the next five years. Recognizing the advantages of consolidating resources and governance, the two institutions formally merged in 1973, creating Loyola Marymount University.
Years included in the yearbooks:
1949, 1956, 1958-1962, 1968-1970
