- Note
- Westwood is a district 13 miles west of downtown Los Angeles. Westwood Village, clustered around its central thoroughfare of Westwood Boulevard, is a shopping district that serves the affluent neighborhoods of Bel Air and Westwood to the north, as well as students from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)" UCLA was founded in 1919 as the Southern Branch of the University of California. The campus was temporarily located on Vermont Avenue on the former campus of the State Normal School. In 1925, the Regents of the university selected a 384-acre site in Westwood for the new campus, and construction began in 1927. Two years later, four of the buildings had been completed, and 5,500 students enrolled at the new Westwood campus. The residential area of Westwood included more luxurious homes to the north and east and less expensive apartments to the west, and was intended for use by UCLA students, staff, and faculty.
