First Annual celebration to aid
in the rebuilding of Los Angeles
Press Release
On Saturday, September
12, 1992, the Kiwanis Club of
Angeles Mesa, who presides
over the Crenshaw/ Angeles
Mesa and Baldwin Hills area,
and the Korean LA. Kiwanis
Club will host their First An¬
nual “Bringing Our Commu¬
nity Together With Love” cel¬
ebration to be held at Jim
Gilliam Park, 4000 La Brea,
from 11:00 AM. to 5:00 P.M.
The event will bring to¬
gether the Black and Korean
community in peace, love, and
togetherness with the ultimate
goal of rebuilding the commu¬
nity.
The Kiwanis Club feels
the reason for most of the prob¬
lem s between both communi¬
ties was the lack of understand¬
ing of each other’s culture. So,
the event will have a host of
ethnic events, such as an eth¬
nic cookout, ethnic art, and eth¬
nic dancers. The community is
invited to get involved.
If you have a special dish
that you would like to show-off
and sell (then do so). All ethnic
chefs are encouraged to dress
in the costume of their coun¬
try, and dress the table or
vendor’s cart to represent that
country. All artists are en¬
couraged to exhibit their art
work for sale. Ethnic dancers
performing Reggae, Mexican,
Asian, Greek, Africap, Ethio¬
pian, Jamaican and other
dances, are welcome to per¬
form. The invitation is also
extended to the Boy Scouts and
Girl Scouts.
CRC is officially renamed MRC
By Lori Sarmiento
On December 5, 1991
MESA made amotion that the
present Chicano Resource Cen¬
ter (CRC) be re-named the
Multicultural Resource Center
(MRC). This move was made
with some very specific inten¬
tions in mind.
Up until this point the
CRC was used mainly by stu¬
dents and organizations oper¬
ating out of the Chicano Latino
StudentServices(CLSS). With
the change, the room is now
being used by students, orga¬
nizations, and staff from the
Office of Black Student Ser¬
vices, Asian Pacific Student
Services and Office of Inter¬
national Studentsands CLSS.
Having the MRC mani¬
fests th at we are trying to unify
as people of color.
The center facilitates
organizational meetings and
class room instructions and is
a clearinghouse concerning
community activities.
Converting the CRC into
MRC is a step towards
multiculturalism. This move
follows the strongbelief in plu¬
ralism that exists among all
the offices of SDS.

The Latino Parent and
Student Welcome was held at
Murphy Recital Hall on Satur¬
day, August 8. The event was
sponsored by the Chicano/
Latino Student Services
(CLSS).
The “Bienvenida” [wel¬
come] was officially given by
President Fr. Thomas O’Malley
on behalf of the LMU commu¬
nity.
According to Roberto
Flores, Assistant Director of
CLSS, “The Latino Welcome
gives us an opportunity to ad¬
dress and welcome the stu¬
dents and their families, par¬
ticularly the families in their
own language.
The goal of the Latino
Welcome is to m ake the Latino
community see that LMU is
here to serve them and to have
them be part of LMU overall.
Hopefully through all this, par¬
ents and families will give in¬
put as to how LMU can trans¬
form into a pluralistic campus.”
Three skits were per¬
formed by students manifest¬
ing the realizations of what to
expect in college and explained
the CLSS organizations on
campus. For example, one of
three skits expl ained the diffi¬
culty of parents letting go of
their children as they leave to
pursue a college education.
Explains First year stu¬
dent Antonia Madrigal, “I
guess the Latino Welcome
made me feel the sense of fam¬
ily that the Chicanos share
here. It relaxed some of my
fear about college.”
Workshops for students
of different colleges on campus
were given by students and
alumni. In addition, a parent
workshop was presented.
“Speaking at the work¬
shop gave incoming students
an idea of what a particular
major encompasses, said
Michael Mesa, a film produc¬
tion major. “They can learn
from upperclass students on
how to deal with schooland the
problems that may confront
them.”
The adjustment from
high school to college can be
difficult, but the Latino Wel¬
come serves to facilitate this
new experience of college life.
