APR 6 1990 Volume * VIII April 5, 1990 "Select Committee on Minorities" Gives Recommendations During the month of February, President Loughran was given the final copy of the "Report of the Select Committee on Minorities," which investigated practices of racism at LMU. President Loughran held the copy without releasing it to the public for nearly a month. The copy was "distributed," but not too many students know its content. Following are the thirty-six recommendations which the committee gave to President Loughran: ADMISSIONS 1. The University should make it clear that it is committed to ethnic equality and to the education of minorities. All official LMU publications should contain language affirming the University’s commitment to ethnic and cultural diversity. This will underscore the importance of racial equality and the education of ethnic students in the University’s missions and goals. 2. The University should establish affirmative action goals for ethnic diversity among students, staff, and faculty. Such goals should aim for a level, of diversity among students, faculty and staff that represents the ethnic diversity of the Southern California region. 3. The University should establish position of Ombudsperson who should act to assist students in the resolution of racial and ethnic conflict with faculty, staff, and administration. The Ombudsperson should be sensitive to issues that cut across the spectrum of the LMU campus and report directly to the President. 4. The University should conduct seminars regarding ethnic diversity issues for all faculty and administrators and all new hires, including non-academic positions. 5. The University’s Orientation Program should include a component introducing students to the University as a multi-ethnic community. This component should include an examination of the role of ethnic and cultural diversity in the curriculum, in the generation of knowledge, in interpersonal relations, and in the Universuty’s service to the communities in the Los Angeles region. 6. The University should hire as Director of Admissions a person with a demonstrated commitment and experience in effective recruitment of ethnic minorities. Future merit performance evaluations for the position should include evaluation of minority student recruitment efforts. 7. University recruitment efforts at local high schools should be more expansive. Efforts should include all of the Southern California high schools with 50% or more ethnic minority enrollment. continued on p. 2
