OPPRESSION CH I LE I IN On Wednesday, October 15th, Paulina Weber Ubilia spoke on repression in Chile and the specific role women have played in resisting the dictatorship of Pinochet. The women's response is to fight back. They do this on several levels. The first is to help resolve some immediate problems such as hunger, by forming "com¬ mon pots" (similar to our kitchen soups) where they provide food for the unemployed and hungry. For many this is the only meal of the day. Women also struggle face to face with the dictator¬ ship. Taking advantage of the macho belief that men cannot beat women publicly, these coura¬ geous women challenge soldiers as to why they are so violent and inhumane to their own people. They also do other actions such as rescuing students and protest¬ ing injustices by demonstrating, wearing black clothes, and decora¬ ting trees with names of the assassinated and exiled. In summary, the Chilean women have united to fight to achieve justice and democracy in their country. But women, together with the Chilean people, will impose life in the end. Since September 11, 1973, a brutal and criminal military dictatorship, headed by General Augusto Pinochet, has reigned the country with terror. Torture, political prisoners, disappear¬ ances and exiles are methods the junta uses to repress the people. It also maintains the Capitol.
