Ilolume # III Date: October 2 3, 1969 MONEY VS. MORALS? The Mexican American Alumni Association strives to promote the greatest good for the Latino students of LMU. This year, they raised over $70,000 and awarded 53 scholarships. All applicants were awarded a scholarship. This summer, M.A.A.A. met to in a rushed meeting to discuss the issue of finding donors to cover the cost of the dinner, the main fundraiser of the year. The banquet this year will be held the 25th of October, at the Sheraton Hotel . The estimated total cost is projected at $35,000. In defining their objectives to finance the annual banquet, the M.A.A.A. board expressed the idea that because they are adamant about raising scholarship monies for Latino students; they would peruse any necessary course of action to raise the money. This is epitomized in the fact that M.A.A.A. chose to approach Joe Coors, in a petition to gather donations to cover the cost of the annual dinner. Infuriated students charged that Coors is a well-known racist and Contra supporter. Accepting any form of monetary compensation seemed like an insult in the face of all of Coor's discriminatory practices. In the history of Latinos, Coors has a reputation for being prejudiced against all minorities. cont. on page 2 During the past week, we celebrated what has come to be called "Dia de la Raza." The events of trhis day are put on to commemorate the Discovery of America by the Spanish in 1492. The discovery of America is an important date for all of us who consider ourselves Latinos and a relevant act for the history and development of a new world. It would be from this new world that a new race would arise, which today is called, justly so, "The Race of Bronze" . Not even the conquistador began to suspect that the voyage he had embarked upon would bring such drastic changes for all of humanity, as his intentions were very different from what came to happen at his arrival to the New World. In 1492, Christopher Columbus became the first European to step on American soil. This day has come to be called "Dia de La Raza" and is celebrated with parades and parties. But we must not forget the true significance of this special day. On this day, two worlds merged to form a new race. The Europeans came together with the natives of this continent, hereby forming the Mestizos. We, descendants of Mestizos, are also descendants of these Europeans who came to the New World.
