- Note
- Circa 1901 Jim Butler discovered silver in Nevada in the area around Tonopah Springs. By 1901, the town of Butler, named after him, had sprung up with a population of 650; by 1902 Butler had a population of 3000. The name of the town was changed to Tonopah in 1905. The mines of Tonopah played out in the 1940s, although Tonopah survives as the county seat of Nye County. W. W. Booth was a long-time editor of newspapers in the mining towns of Nevada and one of the personages of Tonopah. In Tonopah by 1901, he had been editing newspapers since the 1880s in, among other places, Candelaria and Austin, Nevada. His first newspaper in Tonopah was a weekly called the Tonopah Bonanza, which he ended in 1909. In 1906 he started the Daily Bonanza, which he sold in 1929 and then moved to Hawthorne, where he edited another newspaper. Booth's relationship with John Black is unclear, but it demonstrates the ties between the Owens Valley and the mining towns of western Nevada. Black lived in the Owens Valley from 1886, when he moved to Bishop, California. He operated a saloon in Bishop and in 1902 he bought a saloon in Big Pine. He also developed mining interests in the Chrysopolis, California area in the latter part of the 1890s. Voter registration lists from Big Pine in 1922 record his occupation as miner. John Black's wife was Rose, and the two were the parents of Rosalind and J. D. Black. John Black died in 1923 at the age of fifty-eight.
