- Note
- The Loyola University of Los Angeles' football team, the Lions, competed as an independent against teams from the Pacific Coast Conference and the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Conference from 1921 to 1951. Tom Lieb, Knute Rockne's assistant came to coach Loyola football after the Notre Dame coach turned down the offer to move to California. Here is Tom Lieb with lion mascot Lil' Akron, a gift from the Associated Students of the University of Arizona, circa 1935.
