- Note
- In 1880 Arthur Fremont Gilmore bought a 250-acre lot in Los Angeles County (originally Rancho La Brea) between what is now Fairfax and La Brea Avenues, and started a dairy farm. In the ensuing years, he discovered oil on the property and developed an oil field." In 1918, with his grandson, Earl, he expanded the oil production and gas station enterprise to include the first self-serve station. Earl Gilmore added an 18,000-seat sports stadium, baseball park, a poultry farm and a grocery market.
