In the presence of thousands
of faculty, staff and students, del¬
egates from universities across
the nation, and trustees and
regents of the university, Rev.
Robert B. Lawton, S.J., was inau¬
gurated as LMLFs 14th president
in a grand ceremony yesterday.
During the ceremony in
Gersten Pavilion, Chairman of
the Board of Trustees R. Chad
Dreier, alumnus of ’69, and
Academic Vice President Dr.
Joseph Jabbra presented Lawton
with the charter of the university
and the seal of the presidential
office, installing him as president.
On Monday night, Cardinal
Roger Mahoney, archbishop of
Los Angeles, celebrated mass in
honor of Lawton’s inauguration.
The celebration also marked the
Mass of the Holy Spirit.

Richard “Duke” Weber, a Loyola University
alumnus of 1941 and long time Lions supporter,
donated $300,000 this past week to the athletic
department to set up three $100,000 scholarship
funds.
Weber established a scholarship fund in his
own name as well as two others: one in the name
of his childhood friend, Hugh Boyle ('43), and for¬
mer athletic director C85-’98); and another cur¬
rent executive director of athletic development,
Brian Quinn C63).
When Weber graduated from then Loyola
University in 1941, he said that he knew that one
day he would want to give something back to the
school that had prepared him for life. Weber’s
donation came as a surprise to the university and
in particular to Quinn, whose friendship with
Weber began during Quinn’s days as a student-
athlete at Loyola. “I had no idea our long rela¬
tionship would result in
this great gift to the
university,” said Quinn.
“I’m completely over¬
whelmed by the honor.”
Weber chose to give
the money to the school
at this time because he
wants to help LMU gain
more prestige for its
athletic department,
and as a result, the
school as a whole. “It’s
representative of the
rest of the university,”
said Weber. “Many peo¬
ple look askance at ath¬
letics, but they can be a

A feeling of joyous celebra¬
tion filled the air on Monday,
Oct. 4., as the 5:30 p.m. ser¬
vice gathered the LMU com¬
munity for the Mass of the
Holy Spirit and $ historic
event.
Members of the LMU com¬
munity came together at the
Sacred Heart Chapel, united in
prayer for the new school year
and to welcome to the new
president of the university, Fr.
Robert B. Lawton, S.J.
The Mass of the Holy Spirit
is a long-standing ceremony of
tradition in harmony with the
values of Catholicism and the
ideals set forth by St. Ignatius
of Loyola.
As a Jesuit educational
institution, LMU is a part of
many universities across the
country who celebrate the
Mass of the Holy Spirit. It is a
spiritual service dedicated to a
deeper knowledge of God and
how to become more Christ-
like through the power of the
Holy Spirit.
This year, the ceremony
was a unique festivity because
the liturgy was also held in
honor of Lawton’s inaugura¬
tion as the fourteenth presi¬
dent of LMU.
A long procession began at
Regent’s Terrace and contin¬
ued through a dramatic
arrangement of flags bearing
the logo of LMU. In order to
illustrate the rich diversity
that is the LMU community,
