“By far, it’s the biggest crowd
that’s ever been in there this
year. Just the atmosphere that
everybody brought in there was
incredible,” said ASLMU
President Lys{andra Sapp.
The jersey retirement was
publicized as the highlight
event for Homecoming, with
fliers and signs up for weeks
urging students to come to “The
Gathering.” Sapp said, “The
emphasis was on getting people
to the game [against
Pepperdine] . That was where
our focus was.”
Homecoming kicked off with
the women’s basketball team
playing Pepperdine at 5:30 p.m.
As the game was underway,
employees from In-N-Out
served food to fans outside and
students offered free face paint¬
ing in the Gersten lobby. Young
fans took to the court during
timeouts and at half-time to
show off their basketball skills
for the crowd.
In between the women’s and
the men’s games, television
crews set up for broadcast of the
game on Fox Sports Net 2.
Students were invited into the
upper east balcony of the gym,
behind the bleachers, to partici¬
pate in a variety of activities. A
DJ was playing music to the
crowd of mostly students, and
some were playing in a basketr
ball shooting contest.
As the men’s game was set
to get underway, handkerchiefs
honoring Hank Gathers were
distributed. With the Lions
trailing 28-39 at the half, cam¬
era crews came onto the court to
await the retirement ceremony.

Tuition Increase
Near Average
by Mara Slade
Asst. News Editor
With the approval of a
4.84% increase in tuition, LMU
students will have to shell out
an additional $868 for the
2000-2001 school year. This
will bring the cost of tuition fpr
continuing students up to
$18,800 a year, as opposed to
this year’s tuition cost of
$17,932. The majority of the
school’s operating budget
(92.7%) is funded by tuition
and student fees. The increase
has been approved by the
Board of Trustees as part of the
Westchester campus budget for
the 2000-2001 school year.
Another new aspect of the
approved budget will require

pay an extra $300 in addition
to the hike in tuition. The
additional charge is projected
to provide $389,700 towards a
new-equipment fund for all of
the colleges, with special con¬
sideration for the colleges of
communication and fine arts
and science and engineering.
According to John Oester,
vice president for business and
finance, “This is an average
percentage increase in tuition
for LMU. It is almost identical
to last year’s 4.85% increase.” .
He added that it is almost cer¬
tain that tuition costs will
increase every year at private
institutions across the nation.
The question lies in how much
that increase will be for each
individual institution.
This year, in comparison to
other private California univer¬
sities, tuition costs at LMU are
considered to be slightly lower
than the average. Stanford
