Graduation Postponed,
Venue to Change
В
Headaches: Scheduling conflicts,
weather woes leave students, fami¬
lies furious, frustrated.

As the 1999-2000 academic year has been the
year of changes for the university, the Class of 2000
will be feeling the effects as the upcoming May
undergraduate commencement activities have been
postponed.
“We deeply regret having to inform the seniors
that May 6 will not be the day that they will walk
across Sunken Gardens with diplomas in hand,”
said James Fraser, university registrar.
While a date has not yet been set for the resched¬
uled commencement activities, it is expected that
they will take place the following weekend on
Saturday, May 13.
“I do have to admit,” said senior history major
Jim Winner, “that having graduation the day after
Cinco de Mayo was going to be rough. I mean, it’s
inconvenient that the date’s been changed, but I
think it’ll work out.”
In addition to the date being rescheduled, com¬
mencement activities will not be held at the usual
site of Sunken Gardens due to the unusual amount
of rain this winter.
“Unfortunately, we already had to postpone
Charter Ball this year because the grass was too wet
to set up the stage,” said ASLMU President
Cassandra Tapp. “Now, this is extended to gradua¬
tion.”
University officials are working ’round the clock
to find a new venue for the 2000 undergraduate
commencement activities. “One site we have con¬
tacted and are currently working with is the Staples
Center,” said university President Rev. Robert B.
Walton, S.J. “Nothing is set in stone, but it is a def¬
inite possibility.”
“Now that we have another week, I’d like to put
in my input as far as where it will be held,” said
Winner.
The Staples Center remains a possible choice of
venue. “We’d love to host Loyola’s commencement
exercises,” said Center representative Molly
Golightly. “We’d have to schedule i|b soon, however.
Between the Ice Capades, the *N Sync-Christina
Aguilera double bill, and the Phil Collins interpreta¬
tive dance troupe, we’re booking up fast.”
‘We are confident that the problem will be
resolved soon. We realize that this could put a
wrench in a lot of the graduates’ plans, but we are
trying hard to accomadate
everyone as best we can given
the situation,” said Fraser.
The post-graduation
luncheon, which was to be
held on Sullivan Field, could
be relocated to the local bar
and restaurant, the Fireside
Bar & Grill. Fireside officials
were not available for com¬
ment.
Because of this post¬
ponement, many graduating
students are considering
becoming fifth-year seniors.
“I added another minor,” said
senior recording arts major
Steve Newman. “I figured I
might as well use the time
until graduation as wisely as
can. Besides, my parents
are paying my tuition.”

The newly-opened Staples Center could be the site of the Class of 2000's spring
undergraduate commencement activities. Seating would be based on GPA.
Public Safety to Crack Down
on Lenten Offenders

Enforcement policies for the
department of public safety
have finally succumbed to pub¬
lic pressure. Last week, officers
were instructed not only to keep
handing out parking citations,
but also to keep an eye out for
on-campus Lenten offenders.
Unconfirmed reports hold
that public safety officers have
been seen in the Lion’s Lair and
the Ahmarison Dining Hall
secretly taking the names of
Catholic students who eat meat.
“On Friday, I was in line, and
since the food isn’t that great, I
thought I would just get a ham¬
burger,” said Ann Carlson,
senior English major. Shortly
thereafter, she said that she
was followed back to her apart¬
ment and stopped just before
entering the door.
“They asked me why I had
eaten meat on Friday, and I just
told them that I yras Jewish.”
Carlson was then ticketed,
despite her claim of exemption
from Lent.
“It’s not that I hold any
extreme amount of bitterness
concerning public safety and
their new policy, but I fear
where else it can go,” said
Carlson. “Soon, will I be ticket¬
ed if I don’t do my dishes or if I
turn in my homework late?”

Tribune Company
to Buy Loyolan

A Player In Your Game
For Two
In a stunning announce¬
ment, the Tribune Company,
owner of the Chicago Tribune,
announced Sunday, March 26
that they would buy the Los
Angeles Loyolan, Loyola
Marymount University’s cam¬
pus newspaper. The announce¬
ment came two weeks after
Tribune Co. said that they
would buy Times Mirror
Company, owner of the Los
Angeles Times.
The $2.1 million deal marks
the first time in the Loyolan’s
78-year history that it will be
independent of the university.
The Loyolan will continue to
be an entirely student-run pub¬
lication, and there will be few
physical changes to the paper’s
make-up. However, salaries for
student editors are expected to
rise, and circulation will double
to 8,400.
With the expansion and
move into University Hall in
August, many offices will be
moving. As a result of the
Tribune Co.’s purchase, the
Loyolan office will move from its
current space in Malone. In the
fall, the Loyolan will take over
the Doheny Hall, as well as
Sullivan and Huesman, which
were to be renovated into dor¬
mitories. The complex will be
renamed “Los Angeles Loyolan
Square.”
“We look forward to working
with the Tribune Company, and
we will continue to support the
Loyolan in all their endeavors,”
