Mass Celebrates O'Malley's Lega
■ Farewell: LMU uni¬
versity president gives
thanks and sentiments
by Kasey Seymour
Managing Editor
To show appreciation for
eight years of service to the
entire LMU community, stu¬
dents, faculty and staff hon¬
ored university President Rev.
Thomas P. O’Malley, S.J., last
Wednesday, March 24 at a
Farewell Mass held in Sacred
Heart Chapel. The Mass and
reception immediately follow¬
ing, set up in Sunken Gardens,
were sponsored by the vice
presidents of the university.

O’Malley first announced his
resignation last spring on
March 2, 1998! His position
will be filled in June by Rev.
Robert B. Lawton, S.J., of
Georgetown University.
“Typical is the fact that,
when we want to celebrate
something, like Baccalaureate
Mass and Mass of the Holy
Spirit, we turn to the liturgy,”
O’Malley said. “While there
are people who are non-
Catholic Christians or non-
Christians at all . . . it is a way
to celebrate in numerous ways.
I find it enormously uplifting.”
Dr. Lane Bove, vice presi¬
dent of student affairs, said,
“Fr. O’Malley really celebrates
through the liturgy. I’ve
always said that’s what distin¬
guishes Fr. O’Malley as a pres¬
ident is that, first and fore¬
most, he is a priest. I’ve
always felt that about him,
The Mass jusL really fits in
with that.”
Throughout the Mass, stu¬
dents took an active role in the
liturgy celebration. The cere¬
mony began when the choir
sang a prelude piece, “Ignatius
Urbes,” which was written by
LMU alumnus Joshua Fisher
(’98). O’Malley noted that he
commissioned Fisher to write
the music for the piece, after
writing the words himself;
According to O’Malley,
“Ignatius Urbes” celebrates
“some of the great founders of
religious orders.”
“I came into the church
before the procession started
because I wanted to hear it.

Communication Skills Debated
■ ASLMU: Presidential
hopefuls emphasize
improving dissemina¬
tion of ideas on campus.

Staff Writer
Improvement of communi¬
cation throughout the LMU
community was promised by
both tickets at last Thursday’s
presidential and vice presiden¬
tial debates. The debate con¬
sisted of three rounds of ques¬
tions, directed toward each
ticket and toward the specific
offices, and an open question
period for the students in the
audience. Adriana Carvajal,
senator and chair of the elec^
tions committee, moderated
the hour-long debate between
the two tickets, Lysandra Sapp
and Lori Givens, and Sal Ortiz
and Ben McIntyre.
The first question that
Carvajal gave to the candi¬
dates was, “With LMU’s contin¬
ued growth in population,
diversity, and facilities, how
will you ensure that students
will be adequately represented
in any decision making?”
Presidential candidate Ortiz
used the Academic Persistence
Program as an example of a potential out of the student
potential remedy for the ques- body.” He thinks that the stu-
tion of population and diversi- dents’ voices need to be
ty. “This is a program that increased. “What we need to
takes sophomore students, do is give [student assembly]
junior students, and senior stu- back some power so we can
dents and pairs them up with plug in what the students
first-year transfer students need, and by doing that, the
and first-year freshmen,” said student senate and student
Ortiz. “It allows [LMU stu- assembly we will truly know

and academically.” Ortiz presidential candidate Lori
thinks that an important part Givens stressed the need to
of student representation is strengthen the role of the stu-
the student assembly. “This is dent assembly, increasing the

Munch Money Fraud
Reported on Campus

The luxury to purchase
Domino’s Pizza with Munch
Money is without a doubt a con¬
venience for LMU students, lb
pay for Domino’s Pizza with
someone else’s Munch Money, on
the other hand, is a current prob¬
lem on the rise. Victims of recent
Munch Money thefts say they
want other students to beware of
the recent crimes.
In most cases, the easy access
that students have to each other’s
social security numbers increases
the possibilities of purchasing
Domino’s Pizza with someone
else’s Munch Money account
without their knowledge.
“Students can get access to other
student’s social security numbers
when teachers pass around a roll
sheet where students are
required to provide their signa¬
tures along with their social secu¬
rity numbers,” said a sophomore
female student victimized by
Munch Money theft.
Some victims of Munch
Money theft don’t even notice
that money is missing from their
account. “I noticed that I was
missing money on my One Card
because I didn’t have much on it
to begin with, being that it is
almost the end of the school year.
I went to buy food one day and I
noticed that there was only three
dollars left on my account,” said
the student.
On further investigation, the
student checked the transaction
records of her purchase with her
One Card. “On the transaction
record, I found two Domino’s
Pizza orders that I did not make,”
she said.
In the end, students don’t lose
any money if they discover that
money on their Munch Money
