One Step Up
for New Team
■

It is no secret that the LMU
men’s basketball team has
struggled for the past few years,
finishing above fifth in WCC
only once in the past six sea¬
sons. There is a new sheriff in
town, though, who brings in an
exciting, up-tempo brand of bas¬
ketball. Head Coach Charles
Bradley gets his first chance
this season to focus on what the
game of basketball is really all
about: winning.
“Last year we did a good job
of learning how to compete.
This season we are learning to
win,” said Bradley.
Bradley enters his second
season as head coach at LMU
and fifth as a collegiate head
coach, This season, iti essence,
is really the first year with his
system intact because many of
the players are his own recruits.
“I look for guys who fit into
the style of play I want to play.
Making them adjustment to
this new level is tough ... but the
type of players that they [this
year’s recruits] are, I look for
them to grab the bull by the
horns and ‘wrastle’ that sucker
down,” said Bradley of his new
players.
Bradley and the team have put
last season behind them, a year
which saw the Lions finish in
the cellar in WCC play and con¬
clude with an overall 7-20
record. This year’s squad
boasts an offense which has
already put up triple digits in
its first two preseason games.
The coach stresses an up-tempo
style of play, resulting in a lot of
points for the team.
“We have the type of person¬
nel that we need to be a transi¬
tion basketball team. The tran¬
sition from defense to offense is
done in one quick motion,” said
Bradley./ This new offensive
philosophy has worked so far
this young season, producing
e^hihition-game wins over semi- :
professional teams High Five
America and Pump California
All-Stars.
Along with this new offen¬
sive scheme came a strong
reliance on the offseason work¬
outs and conditioning to
ensure that the players could
maintain the intensity through¬
out , all forty minutes of the
game.
“We worked hard in condi¬
tioning this year. We set goals
as a team and accomplished a

adjacent to the Leavey campus
are currently in progress. The
planning council’s subcommit¬
tee is hoping for a final deci¬
sion by the end of December.
Dr. Joseph Jabbra, academic
vice president and chair of the
planning subcommittee, said,
“Lawyers from both s^des are
working hard to complete the
deal by the end of the calendar
year. We have heard some
other institutions are very
interested in purchasing the
building.”
/However, discussions over
space allocation are already
taking place due to the exten¬
sive planning that Would be
necessary should the universi¬
ty be successful in acquiring
the building. The subcommit¬
tee of the planning council met
again, on Now 2, with repre¬
sentatives of JCM Group, a
consulting and management
firm in higher education, who
presented thCir views as to
how the university should plan
to re-configure the building.
JCM used a number of sample
comparative models of similar
campus extensions at other
universities, such as the
George W. Johnson Center at
George Mason University. The
JCM Group is now assisting
LMU in its efforts to allocate
available space. Jabbra added
that “The subcommittee is still
considering a variety of options
[fpr use of the Raytheon
Building], and in due time will
make a recommendation to the
president.”
“Nothing is concrete at the
moment, and the space alloca¬
tion may include [offices for]
