Chris Davis of the CCS Harry Miner agency made
his way down a crowded aisle, amid shouts and
cheers, a medal in one hand and a small bou¬
quet in the other. Upon hearing his name announced
over the public address system, Chris jabbed a euphor¬
ic fist into the air, jumped on the back of his coach, and
held up his medal for all to see. This enthusiasm was
a common sentiment felt up and down the aisle at the *
1998 Special Games.

ASLMU Debates Focus on
Race Relations, Tuition Hikes
■ Elections:
Candidates for presi¬
dent, vice president,
weigh in on the issues.

Under stormy skies, 10
LMU students took the podium
on Regent’s Terrace before their
fellow classmates and argued
how they planned to create a
brighter future, during the
ASLMU presidential/vice presi¬
dential debates held April 2 at
convocation hour.
The hour and a half debate
consisted of pre-screened ques¬
tions contributed by members
of the department of student
life and a period of questioning
from audience members.
Candidates discussed tuition
hikes, lack of school spirit,
effectiveness of the ASLMU
Senate and solutions to the
problems created by the large
percentage of commuter stu¬
dents at LMU.
Sabrina Elizando, ASLMU
vice president of community
service and head of this year’s
election committee, served as
moderator. The first question,
“Which systems will you create
to ensure communication
between ASLMU and the stu¬
dent body?” found consensus
among presidential candidates
for the idea of appointing dele¬
gates from campus clubs. All
agreed the delegates would
report their concerns to
ASLMU.
The idea was first put forth
by presidential candidate
Lysandra Sapp, who also noted,
“Shivohn [Valdecantos] and I
would like to set up a ‘Good
Morning Commuters’ table,
with coffee and doughnuts for
all commuters, as well as mak¬
ing an ASLMU newsletter
available, and sponsoring a
Meet the Senators Night.’”
Presidential candidate
Shirley Blazich agreed that
clubs needed to be more
involved with ASLMU, but sug¬
gested distributing responsibil¬
ity of club relations among
elected ASLMU senators.
“We can also increase levels
of direct communication
between students and ASLMU
by maintaining close contact
with RHA (Resident Housing
Association). J.W. and I would
like to see more ASLMU/RHA
co-sponsored events.”
Marshall Coyle, vice presi¬
dential candidate and running,
mate of La Terra McDaniels,
said, “One of the best ways La
Terra and I can think of to
increase communication would
be to have weekly silent mes¬
sages sent out to all students
announcing events. We also
