On March 9 at Saint John’s Hos¬
pital and Health Center in
Santa Monica, Sr. Mary David
Collins, R.S.H.M., age 74, died of
lymphoblastic leukemia. Sr. Mary
David served as consultant and
administrator in schools through¬
out California and as the Associate
Director of Development at LMU.
“She was both a personal and
professional mentor,” stated Rev.
John S. Rogers, Director of Devel¬
opment. “People would often come
to her and ask both personal and
professional advice.” Sister Mary
David Collins worked as a
fundraiser and “friendraiser,” at
LMU for twenty-five years, afterthe
merger between Loyola University
and Marymount College,
“She was very good at introduc¬
ing people to the University,” noted
Rogers.
According to. Sr. Mary Milligan,
R.S.H.M., Dean of the College of
Liberal Arts, Sr. Mary David had
been treated for illnesses on and
off since September of 1994, but it
was not until February, two weeks
before her death, that she was di¬
agnosed with the cancer. After
diagnosis she was treated with che¬
motherapy and responded well, but
soon after she developed a deadly
infection. “She experienced a very
aggressive form of cancer and
therapy,” stated Sr. Milligan.
Sr. Mary David was born on July
2, 1920, in Limerick, Ireland, and
entered the order of the Religious
of the Sacred Heart of Mary in
1 939. She earned a B.A. in En¬
glish and a secondary education
teaching credential from Mary¬
mount College in Tarrytown, New
York, in 1948; and a Master’s de¬
gree in business from USC in 1 963.
In 1966, she received a certificate
in college fundraising from Loretta
Heights College, and a certificate
in estate planning, taxation and giv¬
ing from the University of San Fran¬
cisco in 1 968.
Sr. Mary David Collins consulted
for Marymount College in Palos
Verdes from 1 967 to 1 973 and was
a member of their Board of Trust¬
ees. Simultaneously, she served
as a financial consultant for the
National Association for Women
Religious and Loyola High School
from 1 972 to 1 973. She was also a
member of the board of Regents
for Chaminade College Prepatory
High School in West Hills.
“Sr. Mary David Collins was one
of the most selfless people I knew.
She was genuinely interested in
others,” reflected Sr. Milligan.
People don’t realize the good things
she did for others in a very quiet
way. She loved everyone and made
no distinctions.”

Loyola Marymount’s Office of Un¬
dergraduate Admissions is re¬
porting a steep rise in the number
of undergraduate applications for
enrollment, with total number of
applications received up) 17 per¬
cent from the same time last year.
In addition, the Admissions Office
was honored with a Gold Award in
the 10th Annual Admissions Ad¬
vertising Awards competition for its
success in the recruitment process.
The judges for the national award
determined that the University’s re¬
cruitment publication, designed for
college-bound high school juniors
and seniors, exhibited the “highest
production standards, creativity,
and professionalism and captured
the attention and admiration of the
panel of judges.”
“The publication’s effectiveness
is one of the reasons the University
has received the largest number of
applications for admission in the
history of LMU,” commented Dr.
Joseph Merante, Associate Vice
President for Admissions and Fi¬
nancial Aid. “At present, the num¬
ber of freshman applicants has in¬
creased 17% over the same time
last year.”
LMU’s publication was selected
from those of approximately 1 ,000
colleges and universities in the
2,000-to-5,000 students category.
The award that LMU received was
the best of show, meaning that
LMU’s entry was chosen without
regard to size or type of institution.
“LMU’s entry was judged the best
of all the entries in all categories,”
commented Matt Fissinger, Direc¬
tor of Admissions.
The competition was sponsored
by the publishers of the Admis¬
sions Marketing Report, a publica¬
tion which studies admissions ef¬
forts by colleges and universities.
