Reflecting a “dedication to
serving those who seek pro¬
fessional and occupational
degrees,” as well as “first class
students, top faculty, and a
reputation for excellence,” Loyola
Marymount was ranked as the
fourth most selective university in
the West by U.S. News and World
Report :
LMU was ranked fifth in a
similar survey last year. The uni¬
versity ranked behind Trinity Uni¬
versity (Texas), Santa Clara Uni¬
versity, and the University of San
Diego.
U.S. News divided the nation’s
schools into categories, using the
guidelines established by the
Carnegie Foundation for the Ad¬
vancement of Teaching. The
categories are national universities
and national liberal arts colleges,
regional colleges and universities,
regional liberal arts colleges, and
specialized institutions.
LMU was judged as a “regional
college/university.” Similarly ranked
institutions in other geographical
regions were Fairfield University
(North), Berea College and Stetson
University (South), Michigan Tech
University and DePaul University
(Mid-West).
U.S. Newsdei’med the schools
that fell within these categories as
“generally awarding more than half
their bachelor’s degrees in two or
more professions. Many also offer
graduate degrees.”
The general category con¬
tained 558 schools which were then
divided by region.
From a Press Release ,
Composer, performer, and
arranger Henry Mancini will
be honored with the 1991 Hal Roach
Entertainment Award from LMU
November 20 at The Regent
Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los
Angeles.
Proceeds from the dinner
support the Hal Roach Fund which
provides state-of-the-art equipment
for the communication arts
department.
Mancini has won 20 Grammy
Awards and four Oscars. He has
written 87 musical scores for films,
Four-year schools, with
enrollments of over 200 students,
were ranked in the study based on
the results of a survey conducted
by U.S. News. College presidents,
deads, and admissions directors
were asked to respond.
Participants were asked to rank
institutions in the same category as
their own, and graded the reputa¬
tions of other schools by placing
them into one of four quartiles.
The “reputational data” was
then combined with the data pro¬
vided by the schools. The statistics
included 1) the selectivity of the
student body ; 2)thedegreeto which
the school financially supports a
high-quality, full time faculty; 3) the
school’s overall financial resources;
and 4) the level of student satis¬
faction as measured by the school's
ability to graduate the students it
admits as freshmen.
“Selectivity was determined by
the acceptance rate among appli¬
cants to the 1990 entering class;
the yield or percentage of those
accepted who actually enrolled, the
enrollee’s high school class stand¬
ings, and either the average or mid¬
point combined scores on the SAT
or ACT.”
Faculty resources ranking was
created from the 1990 ratio of full-
time-equivalent students to full-
time-equivalent “instructional fac¬
ulty."
Also considered was the per¬
centage" of full-time faculty with
doctorates.
The strength of a school's fi¬
nancial resources was determined
by “the 1 990 dollar total of its edu¬
cational and general expenditures,
divided by its total full-time-equiva-
lent enrollment.”
15 themes for television, and six
scores for television films. His works
include "Moon River,” the “Peter
Gunn” theme, and the “Pink
Panther” theme.
Mancini has recorded more
than 90 record albums with styles
varying from big band to classical to
pops. Eight of these albums have
been certified "gold” by the
Recording Industry Association pf
America. After a ten-year absence,
he is once again recording for RCA
Records.
The award benefit will be
chaired by Eileen and Richard
Earner. Mr. Earner is Chairman,
Chief Executive Officer and founder
of National Medical Enterprises Inc.,
a health care provider.
