The Hunt for Red October
reads, “The only word is Wow!*"
In the hunt for the NCAAvs Final
Four, the only word to describe
the Loyola Maiymouiit lion Bas¬
ketball team’s performance in
Long Beach over the past week¬
end is “Wow!" In less than 48
hours and less than two weeks
after star player Hank Gathers*
death, the Lions pummeled two
highly-touted teams, the New
Mexico State Aggies and the
defending NGAA champion
Michigan Wolverines, in route
to scoring a total of 260 points.
The Aggies were thcf Lions*
first-round prey in the tourna¬
ment on Friday night. After a
46-46 tie at halftime, in which
Lion Bo Kimble collected four
fouls, the Lions broke loose in
the second half axid scored 28
points in less than six minutes,
breaking out to a 74-52 lead.
The Lions, never looking back,
defeated the Aggies 111 -92;
National scoring champion
Bo Kimble scored 33 points in
the second half; his game total
was 45 points. For New Mexico
State Coach Neil McCarthy, the
only word was “Wow!"
However, this victoiy did not
satisfy the hungry Lions. In the
sequel on Sunday afternoon, 30
Seconds over Long Beach LMU
dropped 21 three-point bombs
out of an attempted 40 (52.5%)
and steamrolled the 1989 Na¬
tional Champion Michigan Wol¬
verines, 149-115. Included in
the victoiy was arecord 1 1 three-
pointers by Jeff Fryer, who fin¬
ished the game with 41 points.
Kimble added 37 points, Terrell
Lowery had 23, and Per Stumer
scored 21 points.
In the press conference fol¬
lowing the game, Michigan
Coach Steve Fisher was at a loss
for words for the inspired play of
the Lions. He said, “If they play
like this again, 1 honestly don't
know who will beat this team. "
The Lions have dedicated
all of their tournament games to
the memory of Hank “The Bank"
Gathers» and Fryer told report¬
ers after his 41 -point perform¬
ance, “We*re just an emotional
hurricane. We just want to go
out and win it for Hank and l
don’t think we’re going to let
anybody stand in our way."
For Fisher, the only word
was “Wow!"
The Lions will play their
third-round game in Oakland
on Friday night against the
Alabama Crimson Tide, upset
winners Over the Arizona Wild¬
cats on Sunday. It will be the
first time in Loyola Marymount
history that the Lions Basket¬
ball team has reached the “Sweet
Sixteen" of the tournament. If
the Cions beat Alabama, they
will play the winner of the UNLV-
Ball State game, also on Friday
night

Lack of Funding Threatens
of EMS Program
Success
By Peter DeConceicao

P etitions requesting support
for University funding of the
Emergency Medical System, a
group of volunteer, student
.personnel trained in administer¬
ing first-stage emergency medi¬
cine, have begun to circulate on
campus. The petition was cre¬
ated in response to inadequate
funding of the EMS program.
All personnel in the EMS
are trained in first aid and car-
dio- pulmonary resuscitation.
According to Debbie Margulis,
president of the Emergency
Medical Services, Emergency
Medical Technicians (EMTs) are
not allowed to administer drugs.
EMTs provide first aid for blood
loss, broken bones, and the ad¬
ministering of mygen in the
event of respiratory failure. In
extreme cases of cardiac arrest,
CPR is carried out
However, despite the serv¬
ices and benefits thatthe Loyola
community receives from the
presence of the EMTs, the EMS
program lacks proper fimding.
EMTs are not paid by the Uni¬
versity; they receive neither free
housing, nor recognition from
LMU. In addition, they are not
presently permitted to receive
funding from the University for
legal liability reasons.
Financial support is derived
mainly from the budget ballot at
the beginning of each academic
year. According to Margulis, the
funding generated from the
ballot is hot sufficient to cover
all file administrative costs and
disposable medical supplies.
Consequently, there are times
when an EMS member finds
him or herself paying for indi¬
vidual training, medical sup¬
plies, and uniforms. In one in¬
stance, EMTDavid Belinsky paid
$36 for oxygen and was denied
reimbursement from the Uni¬
versity, said Margulis.
_ Margulis believes “walkie-
talkies' should be issued to EMS
personnel on duty; this would
allow better coordination be¬
tween an EMT and a Public
Safety officer. In addition, flexi¬
bility should be allowed the EMS.
For example, currently no EMS

extent to which they are being
exposed to these chemicals.
One incident was brought
to the Loyolan’s attention as a
possible reason for concern.
Anna Kirkpatrick- Wilkey, a
student at LMU, blamed a
migraine headache on her time
spent in the darkrooms.
Kirkpatrick-Wilkey stated, “Af¬
ter looking into it a little fur¬
ther, my husband and I con ¬
cluded that there might be a
serious problem with the venti¬
lation of the photo labs.”
Associate Professor of
Photography Michael Brodsky
has sent three memos regard¬
ing a possible problem to the
Dean of Communication and
Fine Arts, Dr. Arthur Bloom.
‘Fin not an expert in the field of
health and safety but there
could be a problem with the
way the ventilation was built
into the photo labs,” said
Brodsky.
“We are not happy with the
situation, ” said Assistant Dean
of Communication Dr. Suzanne
