Changes Proposed To Calendar
By PAUL BERNAL
Loyolan Staff Editor
Students of Loyola Marymount
University may find several changes
in the academic calendar which might
affect existing vacation time.
The proposed modifications alter the
opening and closing dates of instruction
each semester as well as the length of
the Interterm. The change that merits
the most consideration is the possible
shortening of the Interterm from six to
four weeks.
The three options now being con¬
sidered are that:
1) the university calendar should riot be
altered;
2) fall classes should begin after Labor
Day, end with exams before Christmas,
begin the spring term in mid-January
and end in mid-May;
3) fall classes should begin before
Labor Day, end with exams earlier in
December, begin the spring term in
mid- January and finish in mid-May.
Two factors pertain to all three op¬
tions. First, LMU will always have at

Earlier this year, Loyola Mary¬
mount University underwent a re-
evaluation of its accreditation under the
Western Association of Schools and
Colleges.
As part of this process, every five
years LMU conducts a self-study report
which is then submitted to a WASC ac-
crediation team for verification. ;
The visiting team, consisting of pro¬
fessional administrators and educators
from schools throughout the nation,
was to verify the results of the universi¬
ty report begun over, two years ago. In
addition to their adjudication of the
study, the members were to interject
their personal comments and sugges¬
tions.
The 12-member team spent four days
on campus and weeks thereafter com¬
piling their findings. Their summaries
and observations were then sent to
WASC headquarters in San Francisco,
where evaluations were made and a
final document formed and released to
the university over the summer.
The visiting team found the universi¬
ty’s report to be a solid, self-critical
study with strong analysis of current
situations.
“It gave evidence of a penetrating
review which indicated that the insitu-
tion is well aware of most if not all of
its problems and is dealing quite effec¬
tively with [them],...” the report
stated.
The previous WASC evaluation,
which took place in 1977, made 11 for¬
mal recommendations. The current
evaluation lists 15 recommendations.

least one month without classes bet¬
ween the fall and spring semesters, in¬
cluding the Christmas and New Year
holidays.
Second, because of the new advanced
registration process, there will no
longer be a week of advisement and
registration each term.
“The purpose [of any change] is
centered on the student. This has to be
our primary objective»” said Anthony
J. Brzoska, chairman of an in¬
vestigative committee set up by
Academic Vice President Albert P.
Koppes.
To gain student input to the propos¬
ed calendar changes» Tom Reynolds,
assistant dean of Housing and Resident
Life, is organizing a student evaluation
survey.
The survey will attempt to obtain
500-800 responses collected from dorms
and a booth in front of the Lair. “By
process of random selection, we should
get a fair view of what the students
think,” said Reynolds.
The faculty will also be directly af¬
fected. “There will be a hiring problem
with the staff [if the change is not
made]. They have to wait until mid-
February to teach, so candidates will go
to other schools. Present faculty get
tired of waiting,” Reynolds added.
A committee, under the supervision
of Brzoska, will process questionnaires
sent out to the faculty summarizing
their responses.
Both’student and faculty evaluations
will be presented to Koppes after they
have been summarized and collated by
Brzoska, Richard Perle of the business
department, ‘Warren* Wright of the
mathematics department, Warren
Sherlock of the communication arts
department, and Tom Reynolds from
