■he new faces you see on campus
this week do not belong to guest
lecturers or late late-registrants for the
spring term. They are those of a team
of twelved educators here for an of¬
ficial re-accreditation visit to the
University by the Western Association
of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
The slate of accreditation team
members is an impressive one, and in¬
cludes: Dr. John Cantelon, provost,
Central 'Michigan University; Mr.
Tyrus Harmsen, college librarian, Oc¬
cidental College; Dr. Ira Michael
Heyman, chancellor, University of
California, Berkeley; Dr. Dorothy
Keller, dean of students, Mills College ;
Dr. Lois Langland, professor of
psychology, Scripps College; Dr.
Kneale Marshall, chairman of opera¬
tions research, Naval Postgraduate
School, Monterey; Dr. Donald Parker,
dean of business administration,
Portland State University; Dr. Cheryl
Petersen, professor of political science,
Sonoma State University;
Mr. John Teitscheid, group vice
president of F &
К
Consulting
Engineers, New York; Dr. Jo Ann Vas-
quez, dean of counseling psychology
and education, Unversity of Santa
Clara; Dr. Vivian Vidoli, dean of
graduate studies and research, Califor¬
nia State University, Fresno; and Pro¬
fessor Larry Walker, professor of art,
University of the Pacific.
According to Carol Sullivan, Loyola
Marymount associate dean of liberal
arts, this visit is the culmination of the
University’s self-study process begun in
fall 1981 and summarized in their
“Self-Study Report to WASC” in
November 1982. (Copies of this report,
distributed throughout the campus last
semester, are available for loan in the
library.)
“The chosen members of the WASC
team also received copies of the report
so that they can prepare for the re¬
accreditation visit when they arrive at
LMU,” added Sullivan.
Sullivan asserted that there are three
primary functions of the accreditation
visit: 1) to judge how well the Universi¬
ty is achieving its own institutional
goals; 2) to see how well it complies
with WASC’s standards; and 3) to
assure itself that there was widespread
participation on the part of faculty,
staff and students in our self-study .
“The team will validate our self-
study report by examining the overall
state of affairs at Loyola Marymount,”
Suliivanjioted. It will do this through a
series of meetings with various campus
committees, as well as through formal
or casual interviews.
“They have a limited amount of time
with us — three and a half days,”
Sullivan commented, “but with twelved
people having twelve different sets of
interviews or schedules of visits to com¬
mittees or classrooms, they will be able
to canvass a lot of territory in a relative¬
ly short period of time.”
