President Confirms Riley Resignation
Football Board Sends
Letter to St. Mary's
The Board of Control of Loyola Student Football last
week dispatched a letter to the moderator of the St. Mary’s
College Football Program, voicing the Board’s displeasure
with several incidents at the October 14 game.
In a letter to Mr. John Parziale last Wednesday, the
Board detailed four “game arrangements” it found objec¬
tionable and set down a number of conditions under which
a future contract with St. Mary’s would be signed.
The letter followed by two
days a Monday evening
meeting of the Board at
which the St. Mary’s game
and action to be taken were
discussed. It was consid¬
erably milder in tone and
content than initial state¬
ments made by some mem¬
bers of the Board.
In their original state¬
ments Monday night at least
three members of the Board
of Control opposed renewing
the St. Mary’s contract after
the already-agreed-upon re¬
turn match is played at Lo¬
yola next year.
But statements^ by Tony
Brooklier, (representing the
team) , Dr. Alex Aloia (facul¬
ty advisor) , and Stead Coach
Jim Brownfield convinced
the Board that it would be
better to try to correct the
problems before making any
final decision abotit a future
contract.
After calling attention to
the Board’s “hope of pre¬
serving and improving our
profitable rivalry,” the
Board voiced its concern
over the following items :
“T. The game site was
changed from Oakland to
Pittsburg, which involved
our incurring an additional
expense of transportation
between Oakland and Pitts¬
burg. We point out that our
contract called for the game
to be played in Oakland.'
“2. While we are appre¬
ciative of your assistance in
transporting our equipment
from the airport to the sta¬
dium, we are concerned over

Correction
Last week, an article on
page two of the Loyolan re¬
ported that Mr. Stanley
Chan had resigned as Chair¬
man of the Political Science
Department and as a Profes¬
sor in the Department. We
have since learned that that
report is untrue.
Mr. Chan has resigned as
Department Chairman be¬
cause of his health. But he
will remain as Senior Profes¬
sor in the Department of Po¬
litical Science.
The Loyolan regrets the
inaccuracy and apologizes
for any inconvencience it
may have caused.

Senate Moves Closer
To Committee Approvals
The ASLU Senate inched closer to filling student
positions on several University Committees last Sunday
night, Oct. 15, approving the appointment of four students
while tabling or defeating the appointments of five others.
At the same time, the Senate appointed five students
to the Joint Committee on University Reform. The ap¬
proval came on a narrow 5-3 roll call vote.
Students named to the
committee were John Jack-
son, Larry Rasmussen, Joe
Ashby, Mike Shery and Jer¬
ry Floyd. They were ap¬
proved after RSA Repre¬
sentative Jeff Bachmann
generated heated debate
with his contention that
none of the appointees were
“conservatives.”
The Senate unanimously
approved the appointment of
Tony Cole and Pete Szondy
to the Committee on Intel-
lectural and Cultural Af¬
fairs. But two other appoint¬
ments to that committee
were defeated.
Fine Arts Circle President
Tom Bilike was defeated
0-7-1 after several Senators
criticized his performance
on the Committee last year.
Senior Eric Hansen, also
a veteran of the Committee,
was rejected by a vote of
2-4-2 after a lengthy discus¬
sion. RSA Representative
Bachmann was joined by
Academic Council Repre¬
sentative George Sheridan
and I F C Representative
Steve Davidson in criticizing
Hansen’s alleged indecisive¬
ness last year.
Bachmann charged that
Hansen had vascillated on
three different occasions re¬
garding the appearance on
campus of Dr. Herbert Ap-
theker last May.

Issues Official Statement,
Dispels Rumors of Rift
University President Fr. Charles S. Casassa, S.J., offi¬
cially announced the resignation of Mr. John K. Riley,
Vice-President for Development, last Wednesday.
In an official release distributed through the Office of
Public Information, Fr. President said that “family circum¬
stances have led Mr. Riley to resign.”
The resignation had been rumored on campus for more
than a week, and, by the Friday before the official an¬
nouncement, had been confirmed by several administrators.

summer.
By the first of September,
Fr. Casassa said, Mr. Riley
had told him definitely that
he would resign and return
to his former job in the New
York office of G.A. Brakely
and Co., so that he could live
near his sister and her fami¬
ly.
But the rumors were not
the only problem confronting
the President on his first
day back at the job.
Faculty Meeting
A number of faculty mem¬
bers, on learning that Fr.
President had known about
Mr. Riley’s intentions for a
long time, could not under¬
stand why the President had
not mentioned it at the re¬
cent faculty meeting, at
which a well organized
defense of Development Of¬
fice spending — in reply to a
pre-meeting request by Fr.
Carlo Weber, S.J. — was
presented.
Fr. President explained
that he had agreed with Mr.
Riley not to announce the
resignation until Mr. Riley
wanted him to. He also said
that he saw no reason to dis¬
cuss the resignation in an¬
swering a question about the
financial operation of the
Development Office.
Meanwhile, Fr. President
said, Fr. George Lucy, S.J.,
Vice-President for Univer¬
sity Relations, would be Ac-

With the rumors of resig¬
nation had come a rash of
speculation about the rea¬
sons for it. One rumor had
suggested a rift between Ri¬
ley and the President over
deficit spending.
Mr. Riley, according to
that rumor, had wanted to
mortgage forty-five acres of
the University and engage in
a massive building cam¬
paign, which Fr. Casassa op¬
posed.
Fr. Casassa told the Loyo¬
lan this rumor was complete¬
ly untrue. In an interview
with Loyolan Editor-In-
Chief Jerry Floyd, Fr. Ca¬
sassa said that he had never
discussed deficit spending
with Mr. Riley nor had any
disagreement with him
about it.
The President said Riley
had discussed resigning in

dent had disabled his sis-
