CHARLES B. EDMONDS, TWA executive, presents Guten¬
berg Bible census volume to Loyola president Rev. Charles
S. Casassa, S.J., for Loyola University library.
Gutenberg Index Given
Loyola University was presented with a special edition
of the SOOth Annversary Census of the Gutenberg Bible by
officials of Trahs World Airlines in a ceremony held on the
Loyola campus Monday, December 17.
Loyola president, the Reverend Charles S>. Cassasa, ac¬
cepted the volume for the univer
sity library from TWA executive
Charles B. Edmonds.
SCHOLARLY RESEARCH
The special edition, published in
limited quantity, is a volume for
research for scholars and book
collectors studying the sources
and locations of existing copies of
the original Gutenberg Bible. In
making the presentation, Edmonds
stated that TWA awarded it “in
recognition of Loyola University's
continuing program for expanding
and enriching the research facili¬
ties of the university library."
The completion of the Guten¬
berg Bible in 1455 represented the
invention of printing. Prior to
that date, all manuscrips were re¬
produced by hand.
SURVIVING COPIES
The Census is a one volume
guidebook to all surviving copies
of the original Gutenberg Bible.
The author, Don C. Norman, pre¬
pared the edition by visiting li¬
braries and institutions through¬
out the world. TWA assisted Nor¬
man in arranging his research
trips to Europe and Africa.
In addition to research material
on the Gutenberg copies/ the edi¬
tion contains color reproductions
of the manuscripts themselves.
