Witches Will Whirl Oct. 31
On Halloween eve Loyalans will trip the light fantastic to screeches and howls at the “Witch¬
es Whirl.” This annual affair, sponsored by Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, will be held Tuesday night,
Oct. 31, in the main ballroom of the Deauville Club in Santa Monica.
The gruesome capers will commence at approximately 9 and terminate at one o’ clock.
In the intermittent four hours, surrounded by bizarre decorations appropriate to the season,
Loyolans and their dates will dance their ghoulish steps to ^trains provided by the Del Keys, a seven-
piece orchestra. This group is very popular at SC and UCLA fraternity parties and dances, and has
enjoyed many night club engagements, including a recent tour at the Royal Palms.
As an added attraction of the dance, the annual Fr. Reilly Scholarship will be awarded at ap¬
proximately 10:30. The Scholarship, sponsored again by Delta Sig’s, consists of a free semester’s tui¬
tion to the lucky winner. All students are eligible and tickets are now being sold in the bookstore,
and Lair for 50 cents apiece or three for one dollar. , 'l
“Dressy Sport” will be the mode of dress and three dollars the price of a bid. Tickets are
now on sale and may be purchased at the bookstore or from any Delta Sig.

Coming Soon
Soon, the . .irst 1961 edition of
Loyola’s campus literary magazine
the El Playano, will make its ap
pearance. As in the past, literary
output of the publication will fall
into three divisions: essays, short
stories, and poetry. El Playano will
contain the best efforts of both stu
dents and faculty members.
This year’s El Playano is being
со
by Ray White and Gary
Lease. It is hoped that there will
be more contributions in the poetry
category, since there has been a
noticeable dearth of quality writing
ih this division in the past.
Quality and Quantity
Co-editor W^ite hopes to realize
a sufficient quantity of quali
writing that will enable more stu¬
dents to be represented and pro
vide for an enthusiastic reception
of El Playano among the student
body as a whole.
All contributions for the next
issue of El Playano should be sul>
mitted to Ray White or Gary Lease
not later than Friday, March 2.

on its agenda of tournaments for the fall semes¬

at San Diego State College which took place October 20 and

Camino,
One of Three
The competitive season opens on
November 10 and 11 with the Santa
Barbara Invitational at the Uni¬
versity of California at Santa Bar¬
bara. Following this is the Western
Speech Association Tournament on
^November 24 and 25 which takes
place in Chicago. The most import¬
ant tournament takes place on De¬
cember 8 and 9 in Colorado
Springs, Colorado. This is the Na¬
tional Invitational Air Academy
Tournament, which is open to only
35 colleges in the United States
by invitation only. Loyola’s speech
and debate squad was one of only
three teams chosen to represent
the California colleges. As an al¬
ternate, on these dates of Decem¬
ber 8 and 9 the Fall Championship
takes place at USC. At the same
time and the same place, the Pen¬
tathlon will also take place. This
is a group of five events in speech
and debate. To close the fall sem¬
ester schedule, the Golden West
Invitational will be held on Jan¬
uary 5 and 6 at the University of
Redlands.
According to Mr. Schon, head of
the speech department, coach of
the squad, and President of the
Southern California Forensic Asso¬
ciation, the squad is in for a very
formidable, yet optimistic season.

Hold Lead Parts
i One week remains before the
debut of “My Three Angels,” the
comedy play to be presented by the
Del Rey Players in St. Robert’s
Auditorium.
Sam and Bella Spewack, the au*
thors of the play, based their work
on the French productions, “La
Cuisine des Anges” by Albert Hus-
son.
Macabre Atmosphere
A certain fairy-tale atmosphere
surrounds this story. The Spewalts
use their technique of Whimsy in¬
vention to augment the already
macabre background of three con¬
victs in a French penal colony in
South America. The Spewacks met
and married when they were both
reporters on the staff of the old
New York World. Their first suc¬
cessful play,- “Clear All Wires,” a
comedy about an American news¬
paperman in Moscow, was based on
their journalistic experience in the
Soviet Capital.
“My Three Angels” appeals to
the classic robinhood folk theme of
pinching from the rich to help the
poor.
