Description
John August Swanson was contacted in 2011 by Church Publishing's Morehouse Education Resources for artwork to use in a Lenten study course, "What Wondrous Love". Based on a sketch Swanson made in 1978 of El Greco's Crucifixion, 1596, this work was refined for Church Publishing's study course, a political poster, and a giclee edition. This was the third completed version of The Crucifixion, and was completed with digital changes on February 27, 2015 and printed on March 9, 2015 for the giclee edition. However, Swanson continued to work on the piece, and on January 13, 2012 a new version of the artwork was completed. The artwork was then updated again with digital changes on February 27, 2015 and printed on March 9, 2015. "What Wondrous Love" was released in October, 2012 and includes the 2012 version of the artwork. The giclee edition started printing in 2011, and contains all three variations of the piece. All versions of The Crucifixion were signed and dated either 2011 or 2012.
