- Note
- In the late 19th century and in the wake of the Meiji restoration, which restored Japan to imperialist rule in 1868, there emerged a broad effort to unify the Buddhist community. Increased academic study of Buddhism in Europe and the United States fueled increased authorship which regarded Sākyamuni as the living Buddha.
