Description

Saint Gabriel Lalement (1610-1649), was a Parisian who was associated with the works and sufferings of Saint John de Brebeuf. After suffering incredible torture himself at the hands of Iroquois warriors he was beheaded and his heart cut out. He is depicted in a blue buttoned cassock and green scarf with brown stipes fringed in white Huron flannel. In his right hand he holds two flint-headed arrows; a small star appears at each knee, and below the saint is a pile of wood from which flames of red and gold rise to knee level, all in memory of the saint’s protracted death. The eagle is the central figure of the shield of Regis College. It is taken from the crest of the family of Saint John Francis Regis, the patron of the college. The eagle is gold on a red background and bears on its breast the Jesuit emblem IHS and three nails in gold on a black shield. The inscription reads: Regis College, Denver; the foundation date is 1888. The school colors are blue and gold.
