- Note
- Ed (E. H.) Ober lived Big Pine, California, of the Owens Valley. Voter registration lists from Inyo County record an Edwin H. Ober as a game warden in Big Pine, California, in 1922, and in 1926 his profession is given as "fish culture." He disappears from the voting lists after 1926. Biographical information for the other persons in the portrait is lacking, except for W. C. Stains (sic), who may have been related to the Mormon pioneer William C. Staines. Polk's Directory for Salt Lake City in 1897 lists a William C. Staines who was a car operator, and another who was president of the Can Springs Consolidated Gold Mining company. Fox and Symons was the studio of Alexander Fox (d. 1882) and Charles Symons (d. 1934), located at 322 South Main Street. Salt Lake City, Utah. After the death of his partner, Symons continued to use the name "Fox and Symons" until 1883, according to Carl Mautz, Biographies of Western Photographers (Carl Mautz Publishing, 1997), 487-488. If the date of this photograph is correct, then Symons continued to use the name until the 1890s.
