Born into a politically prominent Los Angeles family, Mary Julia Workman founded the Brownson House Settlement Association in 1901 and led it for 19 years. She became the first woman to join the Municipal League, a civic watchdog group. A Roman Catholic who built cooperative relationships with church leaders, she founded the diocesan chapter of the National Council of Catholic Women in 1924. She led the Los Angeles Civil Service Commission from 1927 to 1928 and helped establish local chapters of the League of Women Voters and the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Throughout her life Workman was active in numerous social and religious efforts in her native city.

[letterhead:] Salt Lake City, Utah [typewritten body of letter:] October 10, 1917 Miss Mary J. Workman 357 Boyle Avenue, Los Angeles, California. My dear Miss Workman: For some weeks, I have been thinking of answering your very kind letter, for I wanted to tell you of my deep appreciation of your kind tribute to our "Intermountain Catholic". I am very grateful for your generous praise of our paper, and your letter serves as encouragement to me and the workers on the paper. I take this opportunity of offering my congratulations to you and the people of Los Angeles, upon the appointment of Father Cantwell. As you know of course, I know that there is a great deal of talk going on in certain places among certain people, who seem to think that everything will be Ultra-Irish, etc. Now I know Bishop Cantwell very intimately, and I can assure you that there is none of that character in him. He is an American citizen, and I feel you have an American, you will be proud of the stand he will take in Los Angeles. And as to the government of the Church in Los Angeles, you may be sure, you are getting a first class administrator. For you in your work, you will find Bishop Cantwell a sympathetic helper and guide, and an appreciative friend. I look forward to a big era for the church in Los Angeles, once Bishop Cantwell begins his work. The invitation to Father's and Mother's golden jubilee, I have received, and I deeply regret my inability to be present, for we will have a large doings here about that time. Archbishop Hanna will be here from the 13th until the 16th, but I will be with the beloved jubilarians in spirit on the great day. Now, confidentially, may I ask you this? Has anyone made any move to obtain the Pope's blessing for your Father and Mother on the occasion of their golden Jubilee? If not, please wire me as soon as you read this letter, and I will see what I can do. With warmest greetings to all of the family, and asking a remembrance in your good prayers.
