- Description
- A portable shrine with a wooden statue of Jizō Bosatsu (bodhisattva Jizō) wearing robes of gold, red, and black and standing in a lotus flower. In the left hand, the figure holds a wish-fulfilling jewel and in the right hand, a ringed staff with a bell at the end. The cylindrical case has two, double-hinged doors with a gilded interior and black-lacquered exterior. A hoop is attached on top of the case.

- The bodhisattva Jizō, the most merciful, is considered a deity of the common people imbued with the power to fulfill all wordly prayers and is the savior of those suffering in hell. Statues of Jizō are often found in temples, private garden shrines, intersections in towns, and roadsides near remote villages to protect travelers even into modern-day Japan.
