- Note
- Hollenbeck Park was dedicated in 1893, on 26 acres in the Boyle Heights neighborhood, between Fourth Street and Boyle Avenue. The land was donated in 1890-91 by William H. Workman and Mrs. J. E. Hollenbeck. Mr. Workman donated two-thirds of the land, and Mrs. Hollenbeck donated the remaining third. The park was originally going to be named Workman-Hollenbeck park, but Mr. Workman declined the offer. The park's main feature was a ravine that was converted to a lake, circled by a winding footpath. It offered a quiet space for recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and picnicking. In the 1950s, the Golden State Freeway was built, passing through the park and reducing its area. The Santa Fe Hospital shown in the distance is one of several hospitals operated by the Santa Fe Railway company, primarily for the care of railway employees in case of accidents or emergencies, but also equipped as a general hospital.
