- Note
- Occupying 160 acres in South Los Angeles, Exposition Park is bounded by Figueroa Street to the east, King Boulevard to the south, Vermont Avenue to the west, and Exposition Boulevard to the north. Originally named Agricultural Park, it was developed in the 1870s as a showground for agricultural and horticultural fairs. The property became state land in the 1880s, but due to poor management and lack of funding, it became a haven for gambling and other illicit activities. The early 1900s saw a campaign to restore the park as public educational, cultural and recreational center, and in 1910, the park was renamed Exposition Park. The state had agreed to build an exposition building and armory if the county would construct and operate a history and art museum and the city would maintain the grounds. The museum opened in 1913 as the Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science, and Art. The original building, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, featured marble walls and a domed and colonnaded rotunda. Additional wings opened in 1925, 1930, 1960, and 1976. In 1961, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art moved to a new location on Wilshire Boulevard, and the remaining portion was renamed the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. The rose garden, featuring nearly 16,000 rose bushes, opened in 1928 just outside the original entrance to the museum. The main campus of the University of Southern California is located immediately to the north of the park. The university first opened in 1880, with 10 teachers and 53 students. It has since expanded to over 33,000 students and 32,000 faculty.
