- Note
- Eric von Stroheim wrote, directed, and acted in "Foolish Wives," a 1922 silent film for producer, Carl Laemmle, head of Universal Studios. Von Stroheim was known for his meticulous attention to detail and authenticity when making a film. Duplicating the entire central plaza of Monte Carlo, including the main facades of Monte Carlo's Hotel de France casino and the Cafe de Paris, cost Universal approximately $1,000,000, making it their most expensive venture to date. The sets were built by Stroheim's assistant, Richard Day, on the backlot of Universal. Fortunately for the Studio and Stroheim, the film was a success.
