- During the reinstitution of an armed forces draft in 1948, Loyola officials set out to insulate the school against depopulation by steering students into the Navy and Army Reserve. Father Edward J. Whelan urged the federal government to bring a ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) unit to Loyola. He was Loyola University President from 1942 to 1949.
