- Note
- Before 1866, most of what is now Long Beach was part of two ranchos: Los Cerritos and Los Alamitos. By the 1880s portions of Rancho Los Cerritos were sold, subdivided and developed under the name of Willmore City by William Wilmore in 1882. By 1888, the population had voted to incorporate the city and rename it the City of Long Beach. The Cinderella Ballroom, located opposite the Municipal Auditorium near the Pike, provided an alternative to the popular Majestic Ballroom. The Villa Riviera at 800 East Ocean Boulevard, was constructed in 1929. The building was designed by architect Richard D. King in a style that incorporates gothic, Tudor, and Renaissance influences. The building was designated as a city landmark in 1979. Located at 850 East Ocean Boulevard, the Pacific Coast Club was founded in 1923, with the merger of the Petroleum Club and the Coast Athletic Club, and formally opened in October of 1926. Designed by architects Curlett and Beelman, the club was built in a chateau-esque style. The building has since been demolished.
