- Description
- Caption: "A leaf from a Breviary in Latin on vellum. Northern, France, Auxerre (?), ca. 1480. Gothic textura quadrata script in dark brown ink, ruled in red, rubrics in red, written in two widely spaced columns of 31 lines, with versal initials of liquid gold on alternating blue and crimson tempera grounds. Variations in the script indicate the work of several scribes in this manuscript. Taking its name from the Latin 'brevis,' (short) the Breviary was a condensed text which allowed the recital of the Daily Offices, most likely in this particular example by a traveling clergyman fulfilling his ecclesiastical obligations."
