- Note
- United States Congressman Anthony "Tony" Coelho graduated from Loyola University in 1964. While a student, he was a brother in the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, a member of the Crimson Circle, and he served as student body president during his senior year. When a diagnosis of epilepsy prevented him from entering the seminary after graduation, Coelho went to work for Congressman Bernie Sisk. In 1978, he was elected as a Democrat to the 96th Congress and served through 5 succeeding Congresses until his resignation in 1989. Because of his own illness, Coelho was actively involved in rights for the disabled, and he ardently sponsored the Americans with Disabilities Act, which passed under President George H.W. Bush in 1994. After his retirement from Congress, Coelho remained involved in the disabilities community while also working in investment and public service. He currently lives in Virginia where he is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation.
