- Note
- The Los Angeles Times began publication in 1881 under the title, the Los Angeles Daily Times, and in 1882, editorship was given to Colonel Harrison Gray Otis, who made the paper a financial success. In October of 1910, in response to Otis' anti-union efforts, unionists bombed the Times' headquarters at the corner of 1st and Broadway. In 1911, construction began on a new headquarters, located at 1st and Spring Streets. The new building opened in 1935 and was, at the time, the largest building in the United States designed and occupied as a daily newspaper publishing operation. It was designed by Gordon B. Kauffmann, and won a gold medal at the 1937 Paris Exposition for its Moderne architectural style.
