- Note
- Century City is built on the site of the 20th Century-Fox Studios backlots. In 1958, facing economic difficulties, the studio decided to sell 176 acres of their backlots to real estate developer William Zeckendorf. The area was slated for development into a completely modern "city within a city." A master plan was developed by Welton Beckett & Associates, and included 20- and 30-storey office buildings, a 1000-room hotel, shopping center, 18 apartment buildings, a 4000-seat auditorium, parks, and restaurants. It was the largest privately-funded urban development at the time. Construction began in 1961, with buildings opening in stages from 1963 onward. Century City's centerpiece was the Century Plaza Hotel, which opened in 1966. The building was designed by Minoru Yamasaki, and involved consultations with the United States Secret Service regarding hotel security. President Ronald Reagan stayed at the hotel so often during his tenure as president that it earned the nickname " of the "Western White House."
