- Note
- John Black operated this saloon in Bishop, California. Voter registration lists from Inyo County record a Louis Munzinger as residing in Bishop in 1922, 1926 and 1928. According to these records, John Mallory was a blacksmith there in 1922 and a James McBride lived in Bishop in 1922 and 1926. The Birchims were a pioneer family of ranchers in Bishop, with a son named Will, who is perhaps our "Billie." As for Black, he bought this saloon in 1888. In 1902 he opened a saloon Big Pine, and later moved his family there. He also developed mining interests in the Chrysopolis, California area, beginning in the late 1890s. While possibly a miner in Virginia City, Nevada, John Black met Rose Carroll and married her in Bridgeport, California; the couple resided in Bodie, California, until moving to Bishop, in 1886. He was the father of J. D. Black (1893-1960), seen here in the photograph. John Black died in 1923.
