- Note
- The Mullen and Bluett Company, a high-end clothing department store with a specialty in menswear, was founded by William Mullen and Andrew Bluett in 1889. The department store was first located at the corner of First and Spring streets and later moved to the Walter Perry Story Building at Broadway and Sixth streets. The building was a twelve-story Beaux Arts style structure named after Walter Perry Story, who was a successful businessman, civic leader, and Major General in the California National Guard. Located at 610 N. Broadway, the 1909 building was designed by Morgan, Walls, and Clements. The first three stories and the basement of the building were initially designed for retail, and the Mullen and Bluett occupied the space from 1910 through the 1960s. The building is now known as the New Story Building, and it houses offices and jewelry businesses.
