- Note
- Located in the Santa Monica Mountains, Topanga was first settled by Mexican citizens in 1839. In 1862, President Lincoln's Homestead Bill opened the canyon up to further settlement. During the 1920s, it was a popular weekend destination for Hollywood stars, providing both privacy and a beautiful natural setting. During the 1950s, blacklisted actor Will Geer moved to the area, and, along with his friend Woody Guthrie, created the beginnings of an artists' colony that grew and flourished during the 1960s.
