- Note
- In 1896 Colonel Griffith Jenkins Griffith (1850-1919) donated 3,015 acres of his land (formerly Rancho Los Felis) to the City of Los Angeles to be known as Griffith Park and used for public recreation for the "plain people." Entertainment at the park would eventually include a Merry-Go-Round, zoo, equestrian center, golf course and athletic fields, tennis courts, a picnic area at Crystal Springs, the Municipal Plunge, Boys' and Girls' camps and the Griffith Observatory. When plans to construct an observatory on the site were stalled, his attention turned to plans for the amphitheater. In 1916 Griffith pledged another $50,000 and appointed a trust to disperse the funds and supervise current and future projects according to his wishes. He named his son, Van, to oversee the Griffith Trust and the construction of the theatre. Work on the Greek Theatre began in 1928 and opened on the night of September 25, 1930, with an eclectic program of classical and ethnic performances that continue to this day.
