- Note
- John J. Cantwell was appointed Bishop of Monterey-Los Angeles in September 1917. He was noted for being particularly sensitive to the needs of non-English speaking Catholics in the archdiocese, and he created 50 Hispanic parishes and missions. Mary J. Workman was reared in the Roman Catholic faith, receiving a Catholic education at the Convent of the Sacred Heart of Mary and Jesus, in Oakland, from which she graduated in 1890. She led the establishment of the Brownson House (1901), a landmark of the settlement house philosophy on the West Coast. She also participated in the Catholic Association for International Peace (CAIP), Southern California Committee, of which she was secretary. Mary Workman would later be granted the papal medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice in 1926 by Pope Pius XI.
