- This circular plaza was celebrated as the center of Los Angeles' community throughout the 19th century as it served many purposes including marketplace, entertainment, political demonstrations and cultural venues for Mexican and Central American people. It was surrounded by the Plaza church (Nuestra Señora La Reina de Los Angeles or The Church of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels), the Avile Adobe, the Italianate style Masonic Hall, and the Italian Renaissance Revival style Merced Theater.
