- Note
- The City of Burbank is located in the East San Fernando Valley, on land that was originally part of two large Spanish land grants: Rancho San Rafael and Rancho La Providencia. The city was named for David Burbank, a dentist and entrepreneur from New Hampshire who purchased the land in 1867. Anticipating the economic benefits of the railroads, Burbank sold a right-of-way through is land to the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1886, Burbank sold much of his property to a group of prospectors who formed the Providencia Land, Water, and Development Company. The company laid out a central business district around the intersection of Olive Ave. and San Fernando Blvd., and began selling tracts. Growing steadily, the city voted to incorporate in 1911. Over the years, the city's major industries have been aviation and entertainment. The aviation industry in Burbank began in the 1920's, when Lockheed purchased land and built a plant for manufacturing planes. During World War II, the need for planes swelled the city's population. The motion picture industry was present in Burbank as early as the 1920s, when production companies began filming on the streets of Burbank. In 1926, First National Pictures (which later became Warner Bros.) began building their studios in Burbank. Columbia purchased 40 acres in 1934 for the Columbia Ranch, adding another 40 acres in 1949. Other studios followed, including Walt Disney in 1939 and NBC in 1951.
