- Note
- Franklin Canyon is a 3.5-mile gorge in the Santa Monica Mountains above Beverly Hills. In 1914, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power built a reservoir in upper Franklin Canyon to distribute water brought in from the Owens Valley. Oil tycoon Edward Doheny built a Spanish style home in lower Franklin Canyon in 1935, which served as a family retreat. The canyon was slated for development during the 1970s, but was preserved when the National Park Service purchased the land, making it a part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Running through part of Franklin Canyon is Mulholland Drive, named for William Mulholland, the head of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and engineer of the Los Angeles Aqueduct. The serpentine route, winding over 21 miles from Leo Carillo State Beach in the west to Hollywood's Cahuenga Pass in the east, officially opened to great fanfare on December 26, 1924.
