- Madame Chiang Kai-shek, the wife of the president of Chinese Republic, received an honorary doctorate degree of laws from Loyola University. Reverend Edward J. Whelan, S.J., the ninth President of Loyola University (1942-1949), presented the degree to Madame Chiang. His Excellency, Most Reverend John J. Cantwell, Archbishop of Los Angeles, then placed the academic hood of the new degree over Madame Chiang's shoulders.
