- Note
- The City of Torrance is located 19 miles southwest of downtown " Los Angeles, on lands that were once part of the Rancho San " Pedro. In 1911, Pasadena financier and philanthropist Jared " Sidney Torrance bought 3,500 acres of land from the Dominguez " family, planning to turn it into a modern, industrial city with business, industrial, and residential districts. It was well situated to make use of nearby San Pedro, the major shipping port for Southern California. Torrance hired landscape architects John C. and Frederick Law Olmstead, Jr. to lay out the townsite, and archited Irving Gill to oversee the construction. The plan incorporated ample space for public parks, and included the planting of over 300,000 trees. The citizens voted 355-to-11 to incorporate in 1921. The discovery of oil in Torrance in the 1920s brought prosperity to the area, and it remains a major oil-producing region for the SOuthern California area.
