- Note
- John J. Cantwell was appointed Bishop of Monterey-Los Angeles in September 1917. He was noted for being particularly sensitive to the needs of non-English speaking Catholics in the archdiocese, and he created 50 Hispanic parishes and missions. Mary J. Workman was reared in the Roman Catholic faith, receiving a Catholic education at the Convent of the Sacred Heart of Mary and Jesus, in Oakland, from which she graduated in 1890. She led the establishment of the Brownson House (1901), a landmark of the settlement house philosophy on the West Coast. She also participated in the Catholic Association for International Peace (CAIP), Southern California Committee, of which she was secretary. Mary Workman would later be granted the papal medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice in 1926 by Pope Pius XI. Dating back to the mid-nineteenth century, the Workman family holds a distinguished place in Los Angeles history. William H. Workman (1839-1918), the son of David, and his wife Maria Elizabeth, and father to Mary Julia Workman, made his mark in Los Angeles politics and the development of the city infrastructure. The most important civic office that William H. Workman held was mayor of Los Angeles, from 1887 to 1888.
